The Heat is On!

Well, we were begging for this weather in the spring and now it's here!  It's certainly been hot and dry but we have a good irrigation system as well as a secure supply of water.  There are dry spots around but for the most part we are OK.  Just as the extreme wet weather exposed the weaknesses in our drainage system, the extreme dry weather exposes the weaknesses of our irrigation system.  Keeping the high spots moist enough and the low spots dry enough is the biggest challenge.  On greens we use a moisture sensor to help us get consistency and water only when necessary.  For close cut golf course turf, there's a fine line between too little and too much water.  The extreme heat and humidity can also wreak havoc on our weaker grasses - from disease, heat stress, or insect activity.  Depending on how hot it gets, we may have to become conservative with some of our practices - particularly those aimed at green speed.

Speaking of drainage, we will be installing drainage on portions of holes 1,2,5,7,8,9,
and 16 commencing in mid August.  We won't need to close any holes to work on them, however, we will be moving the tee blocks beyond the work areas for the safety and efficiency of the contractor.  More information to follow as we get closer to commencing the work.
