Hydraulic Leak

One of my worst fears as a Superintendent is having a hydraulic oil leak on a green.  Well unfortunately, it came true today on the 5th green.  It's the first serious leak we've had in 10 years but that's of little consolation.  The affected turf will die over the next few days and there's nothing we can do to stop it.  What we can do is try to get it back as quickly as possible.  The best option at this point in the summer given the weather we are having is to spike, seed, and topdress the affected areas.  This green will receive a lot of attention over the next several days and we will do everything possible to encourage a quick recovery.

I hear some courses are using a vegetable oil base hydralic fluid which will not burn out the grass. Is this true and or plausible for our equipment?

I am amazed at how quickly the green is progressing. You and your crew are doing a fantastic job Cory!

Tom,

We have experimented with the vegetable oil (very expensive) but the problem is the heat of the fluid coming out of the pump. It probably could have been water and still killed some grass...thanks for the comment though.

Anonymous,

Thanks!
